expected it to work better

We've been using accordion-style racks for drying laundry for several years now. Some were great (the Polder and Household Essential 3-tier racks, still sold on Amazon), some were crappy (cheap wooden rack), some seemed like a hit at first but later developed structural problems that ultimately rendered them unusable (the Sterling 4-tier rack). We looked into buying a rack that will have ample drying room but wouldn't take too much floor space. This "enhanced" 3-tier concept seemed to fit the bill with nearly twice as much (!) drying space compared to ordinary 3-tier racks. Although there were a couple cheaper models, we ended up ordering the more expensive Moerman because it appeared to be sturdier in the pictures.First, the good things:- It does have a lot more rods, in fact almost twice as many compared to the vanilla 3-tier rack. So you get more space, albeit not as much *usable* space (see below).- It is rather sturdy, possibly because the piece bearing the tension was moved to the bottom and the cavities used for locking the rack are well designed.- The hanger holes are a nice touch at the corners, and sometimes even usable...However, there are some inherent flaws, and some quirky design choices, which make this rack less than ideal for use, in my experience:- Horizontal clearance between rods: if you hang something on each rod (which you obviously want to do, otherwise not utilizing the full capacity of the rack) the clothes are often in contact across rods, blocking the proper flow of air between them. Clothes I hang on this rack take about a day longer to dry compared to an ordinary accordion-style rack.- Vertical clearance between rods: about 60% of the rods (those used as hinges when folding the structure, and the ones added as extensions on both sides) are properly spaces, just as in an ordinary accordion-style rack. However, the remaining 40% (the extra rods added between every pair of hinge rods) only have *half* the vertical clearance! This may be fine if you insist on using those for hanging smaller articles (shorts, toddler T's?), but anything larger would cover whatever is underneath and will take much longer to dry. The unfortunate part is that they could avoid this problem by making the intermediate rods slightly misaligned across different levels---there is nothing that prevents them from being positioned with some offset, except the designer didn't see the necessity to do so...- It's clogged: the fact that you have twice as many rods in the same space makes it a lot harder to access the internal ones. Hanging laundry is time consuming already, now it is even worse because you'll have to maneuver your way to the inner rods and spend a few more seconds laying each article properly. This might get better as I get used to working with the thing, but right now it's a major pain.- Furthermore, this rack enforces a specific way to hang your laundry: you'll have to use the innermost rods first, then the second innermost, third, and fourth. Hanging stuff from bottom to top won't work here because of the close proximity between the rods. In addition, for the first time in years I find that I actually need to access the rack from both sides in order to use every rod: it is nearly impossible to access the ones on the far side to where you stand.- Because of the enhanced design, you lose the top rods that are normally present in an ordinary accordion-style rack. That's a shame because these are the most usable and easy to access...- Finally, the width of the rack is really awkward: it is just enough for one adult T-shirt, or two toddler pants, but anything in between would leave some small space that cannot be used without overlapping the two articles beyond what's desirable. That said, this is my own fault not noticing and comparing it with my other racks *before* the purchase...This rack is still useful, as it is study and can save you some space. At the very least, you can avoid using the intermediate rods, essentially turning it into an ordinary 3-tier accordion layout... but this would defeat the purpose of buying this more expensive one. There is also a "jumbo" version of a similar product (by Minky) which may be a little better as far as spacing and layout, and so might be a better investment. I am personally somewhat disappointed with this rack and would think twice before purchasing something along the same lines.

Love the 3 tier airer

I have had the Moerman 3 tier airer for about 3 weeks now and it's been exactly what I wanted. I can hang an entire load of laundry on the rack. It has several thicker rods that I use to hang those items that I don't want 'drying lines' in. It's strong enough too; I've had 3 pairs of jeans along with the rest of a load on it with no problem. It's also wide enough to fit an adult t-shirt without bunching. So far, it's perfect.

So far, so good!

I cringed at spending this much money for a drying rack, but so far it's seemed a better investment than a flimsy rack we purchased from Target (and eventually threw out). It arrived in a gigantic box, and shortly after I set it up I realized one of the plastic blue corner pieces was cracked. Dismayed, I contacted Moerman through their website and honestly didn't expect to hear anything. Lo and behold, I had an email within 24 hours that a new piece was in the mail! It arrived a few days later and popped right on. Huzzah!The rack has an adjustable footprint, depending on which "setting" you use. Since we live in a one-bedroom apartment, this is pretty nice. It folds up well and fits in our hall closet, but it's heavier than the wood variety. The drying bars on the interior of the rack are really skinny, and are also very close together so reaching in to get damp clothes spread out in the interior of the rack is not exactly a hassle, but takes some maneuvering. In one case, some things that were close together did not dry as quickly as they might have because of the overlap. Of course, practice on my part might help.Overall, pleased in spite of the price! Expect this will last much longer than our last metal drying rack.
